Some Thoughts on Abortion

The Bible does not use the word abortion, yet it does teach us several things about how God views children between conception and birth.
David praises God that He "formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb" and declares "My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed"(Psalm 139:13, 15). God knows us in the womb, and we are living beings there.
God tells Jeremiah "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations"(Jer 1:5). Note that Jeremiah was sanctified and ordained while in the womb-a living being.
"And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb"(Luke 1:41). Though he was in the womb, John is called a babe-a term that is used to describe children after they are born. Further, he leaps in the womb, just as Hosea tells that Jacob symbolically "took his brother by the heel in the womb"(Hosea 12:3). Are these pictures of lifeless blobs or of living children?
Also Elizabeth did not just conceive a child, but she "conceived a son"(Luke 1:36). At conception children have identity and gender in God's eyes.

Since God sees children as living while in the womb, we must treat unborn children with the same care and delicacy as we would born children. If cruelty to a helpless newborn is a travesty, how much more a helpless child in the womb?
God condemns murder-the willful taking of another life-in several places in the Bible (Rom 1:29, Gal 5:21, Matt 15:19, etc). If children are alive in the womb, how is abortion different from murder?

Abortion reveals a disturbingly skewed view of children and family. God declares that "children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward"(Psalm 127:3). Many today feel children are a punishment rather than a "reward." God says, "happy is the man who has his quiver full of them"(Psalm 127:5); many today say that such a man would be "sad" rather than "happy"!
Children should not be viewed as an inconvenience, but a blessing. It is disturbing when selfishness reaches the point that we will actively hurt others to avoid being inconvenienced.
To be fair, many abortion circumstances are not so cut and dry, and deal with thorny issues. Cases of rape and concerns about the mother's health complicate matters. Yet in all these things, let us decide the best course prayerfully, with a constant eye on the fact that God has given this young, helpless child life-and it is our duty as parents to protect him or her.

The practical impact of this teaching is not political. There is no political obligation enjoined on Christians by Scripture except to obey the laws of the land (Rom 13:1ff).
Some feel a burden to be politically active, and if you do, by all means do so. However, the thrust of our responsibility is not here.

Our responsibility is to talk openly and frankly about abortion and what God says about life in the womb. It is not a battle of statistics and grisly pictures, but appealing to people on moral ground and challenging them to obey God and love their children, as He directs (Titus 2:4).
Our goal is to dissuade people from abortion on moral grounds-and no other. To this end we must study, be honest and gracious, and genuinely try to help people.
It would not hurt us if we began to view our children the way God does-as a wonderful blessing and heritage from the Lord-and so convince others of the joys of parenthood. ___Jacob Hudgins
