What Must I Do to Be Saved?

What Must I Do to Be Saved?

I. Why is this study important?
A. If we hope to be saved by the grace of God (Eph 2:8-9), we must meet His
conditions.
B. Many false teachers and denominations deny the Bible's teaching on what we
must do to be saved. If we teach or are taught error on this topic, we may not do God's will and not become Christians at all!
C. We want to be saved! How do we know if we are? Only Scripture holds the
answer!
D. We will look particularly at conversions in the New Testament to see how
they did what we want to do-be saved in the eyes of God.

II. We must hear the gospel
A. This is where conversion begins. When people became Christians in the New
Testament, it was because they first heard the good news about Jesus.
B. Acts 2:37. "When they heard this"-The first 3000 who obeyed the gospel on
Pentecost did it because they were convicted by Peter's message. They
realized that what they heard meant they needed to change!
C. Acts 8:35-36. Philip preached Jesus to the eunuch, and he wanted to be
baptized. Why? He had heard about Jesus and that baptism had
something to do with what he had heard!
D. Rom 10:14. We can't believe what we don't know of.
E. Can we be saved just by hearing? No. Acts 7:54-these were not saved.

III. We must believe what we have heard
A. Hearing the word produces faith, not miraculous indwelling. Rom 10:17.
B. John 3:14-16. We must believe in Jesus. More than agreeing with facts about
Him, but we trust Him and will follow Him. Why? We have heard what He's done for us.
C. Acts 16:30-31. Thus when Paul spoke to the jailor, he knew he needed to first
believe in Jesus before he could be saved. Certainly his next question was
"Who is that?".
D. Acts 10:43. Remission of sins comes when we believe in Him.
E. Can we be saved just by believing? No. James 2:19, 24. Not by faith only!

IV. We must repent of our sins
A. Repentance means a pledge to follow Jesus for the rest of our lives. He
becomes Lord of my life!
B. Luke 24:46-47. God's plan was for repentance and remission of sins to be
preached. Repentance is part of the gospel!
C. Acts 3:19. Peter tells the audience to repent so their sins could be blotted out.
D. Acts 17:30. These Gentiles needed to repent of their idol-worship-God
commanded them and all men everywhere to repent.
E. Are we saved simply by repenting? No. Acts 2:38-Repentance is tied to
baptism. If one is for the remission of sins, both must be!

V. We must confess our faith in Jesus
A. This is the step in which we let others know we believe. God won't have us if
we're ashamed to let others know we believe.
B. Acts 8:36-37. The eunuch confessed his faith in Jesus. He was not ashamed
that others knew he believed.
C. Rom 10:8-10. There is a heart part and a mouth part to salvation. The heart
part is faith, while the mouth part is salvation. But is that all we must do? Are words enough?
D. Are we saved simply by confession? NO. We must do what He says! Mark
16:16. Even the demons believe (James 2:19) and confess (Mark 1:24).

VI. We must be baptized for remission of sins
A. Acts 2:38
B. Acts 8:12-13
C. Acts 8:35-38
D. Acts 10:48
E. Acts 16:30-34
F. Acts 22:16
G. 1 Pet 3:21
H. Mark 16:16
I. John 3:5
J. Gal 3:27
K. Rom 6:1-6
L. Matt 28:18-20
M. Are we saved simply by baptism? No. Mark 16:16. All these things must be
together.
N. When we have done these things, we can know we are Christians and our sins
have been forgiven. We must continue to follow Jesus' commands and
remain in His favor.___Jacob Hudgins
